The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, often in the crosshairs of the
pro-oil lobby and conservative politicians, has been an area I've
long wanted to visit and photograph. Recently I was very fortunate
to travel to this location for nearly two weeks with professional
photographer Art Wolfe, who was filming a series based around his
travels & photography.
Although I grew up in Alaska for part of my childhood, I still anticipated
being impressed by the landscape and wildlife of the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge. Similarly having seen landscape and wildlife photographs/presentations
made by Art Wolfe I knew I would be in for a real treat. Even though
I expected so much I was completely blown away by everything that
was the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and incredibly impressed by
Art's knowledge in regard to his photographic skills, Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge's wildlife and political current events.
To the casual observer and by most means of seeing this vast area, primarily by air, you would never know what diversity of animals and plants exist here. It is only after exploring this amazing terrain by foot that you begin to understand how this extreme landscape conceals its very specialized, and sensitive yet hardy inhabitants. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is like no other and truly deserves the protection it has been given.
Normally I would return from a trip like this and post my images in
bulk, but to truly convey the unique and special qualities this land
holds I am taking a different approach. For the next couple of weeks
I will spread out the images I share (highlights from the 4000 photographs
taken) to provide not just amazing landscape and wildlife photographs,
but to share with you a little more detail about the areas I visited
and what I learned along the way in the Arctic Refuge.
Of all my photographic endeavors to date I hope my images of this
location not only inspire, but energize those looking at them to take
special note of this area and help lobby for its continued preservation.
