Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Landscape Comparison -
Low Altitude View of An Arctic River Connecting to the Arctic Ocean Under A Growing Layer of Fog
Taken while flying north to Kaktovik, rivers large and small braid their way through the Arctic Coastal Plain. The landscape is flat and scarred from permafrost freezing and melting as the seasons cycle. The Arctic Coastal Plain in this part of the state stretches 20 miles between the Arctic Ocean and the Brooks Mountain Range. Else where in the state the Arctic Coastal Plain expands from 20 miles to somewhere between 50 and 80 miles. This vast area is the birthing ground for hundreds of thousands of caribou and other species including over 160 species of migratory birds.
