Landscape, Nature And Travel Photography

You’ve been working on photos too much when…

The past couple of weeks I’ve been catching up on processing photos from several photo shoots. The side effect has been thinking photographically at the most inappropriate times. Catching myself most of the time I usually only can laugh to myself, but I thought I would compile a short list of these situations to share with others in the event you might also get a chuckle.

You’ve been working on photos too much when…

1. You walk into a room and automatically think about the right white balance setting.
This happened to me when I walked into a fluorescent lit restroom of all places. I still don’t know why.

2. You consistently note magic hour lighting as you do other things.
A perfect example of this was when I was walking my dogs with my wife around the neighborhood after sunset one evening, the sky turned a magical deep blue. This lighting condition, when in limbo between dark and the very last bit of daylight, exposes beautifully with a longer exposure. As you can imagine during the walk all I could think about was setting up a shot with a long exposure.

3. You look at someone else’s image and can identify a specific color cast.
Note: I can only do this because of years of experience post-processing photos. Sometimes it’s a blessing and other times it’s a curse.

4. You see spots. No not from staring at your computer screen for so long, but from spending your time spotting your images. Nothing is worse than seeing spots from a dirty sensor and after spotting your images long enough you notice spots on images from other photographers.

5. Someone comments, “You’re a photographer. Why aren’t you outside shooting? You’re always at the computer working?!” Sadly this is a real life quote from my wife. These days photography is as much post-processing as it is shooting. My explanation made sense to me, but not so much to my wife.

  • 7. When considering updating the decor of your house/apartment, your primary concern is what type of lights to use and where.

Guilty. I'm also incredibly guilty of 1 and 2. The others, not so much.
  • I can relate to everything you have written here!! LoL!

    6) You start noticing color casts in tungsten lights, fluorescent lights and other street lights and how one bulb emits a light that is a little more green than the one next to it.
  • While walking along the street with your S.O. or sitting at a coffee place with friends you imagine your eyes are your camera and you hear the shutter click every time you blink.
  • #5 is something I've been asking myself. I think I need to cut back.
  • While driving in your car, you spend more time looking at the passing scenery for a photo opportunity than you do looking at the road..
  • 6. You start seeing in black & white. This usually happens to me after I go on a monochrome kick -- not literally, but you know what I mean.
