Oaks In The Fog

Monday I took the day off to get out and get some photography under my belt. I was joined by a good friend of mine who introduced me to some new areas to photograph iconic California Oak trees. With conditions nice and foggy it created some beautiful photographic opportunities.

I have to admit this portion of the day went a lot smoother than later on when I botched some shots. During this shoot I got several good shots many better than this one (more to come later of course). Running with the motif of the “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”, we’ll chalk this one up to “The Good”. Later this week I’ll post “The Bad” and “The Ugly” and try to explain why things didn’t turn out as I had hoped.

A perfect example of perspective. Fabulous shot! When you find yourself interacting with a photograph (i.e. turning your head) you know you’ve done your job.

[...] Another photo from my Monday photo outing. On the scale of good to bad of the photos I’ve highlighted so far (The Good, The Bad) this is the worst and as such is “the Ugly”. Photographed is a close up of a fallen Oak with fog shrouded living Oaks on a hillside in the distance. [...]

[...] Another perspective of California Oaks in the fog. This was taken the same day as Oaks In The Fog and Oaks In The Fog II. I think this may be my favorite of the trio. I know this won’t appeal to many as a front and center show piece, but I like the subtlety of the scene. Perhaps this is destined for stock photography, but I have hopes that this will appeal to those with an eye for fine art photography as well. Time will tell. [...]

[...]  Yet another perspective of California Oaks in the fog. This was taken the same day as Oaks In The Fog, Oaks In The Fog II and Oaks In The Fog III. One interesting effect the fog provides when it is thick enough is to veil the dimension to your subject. California Oaks are a very challenging subject to photograph as the branches jut everywhere and lining up an area of compositional focus can be difficult. For this shot I really wanted to take advantage of the heavy fog to highlight a flat shape of the tree trunk. Opening up the aperture allowed me to keep the depth of field shallow also adding to the effect. With in seconds the fog started to lift enough to reveal more detail on the tree trunk, but I think I like this one best. [...]
