Half Dome Reflections II, Yosemite
In mid-December I made a 1-day pit stop to Yosemite and took very few photos. This photo of Half Dome’s reflection in the cold Merced River water was one of the few taken. I like this photo for two reasons. First the lighting on Half Dome… the otherwise gray formation takes on a completely different look at sunset. Second the transformation of form created by the ripple passing through the water. I can’t claim that reflections of Yosemite’s formations are anything new, but they can be a refreshing change of perspective.

Jim this is really a VERY nice shot. I think most people (me included) would have rather included both the real thing and its reflection !
well done

That’s an amazing shot. When I first saw it I thought you had applied a ripple filter through PS. It’s amazing that this was the actual reflection! Wow…

Hi Jim:
There are two things in particular that I like about this photograph. First, and perhaps most obvious, it is a unique take on a subject that we have all (yes, me, too) photographed to death. It even looks like it might have been take from near the classic Sentinel Bridge site. (You know the joke about photographing in Yosemite, right? You need to open up by one stop to compensate for all of the light that has been captured by previous photographers…)
Second, I very much like the way the circular ripples come from the spot on the left side and work their way around the form of Half Dome.
Nice work!

[...] A slightly different take on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. The manner in which this photo was taken is not unlike the technique used in making Half Dome Reflection II, Yosemite. Early morning lighting in this area can be elusive and fast changing, but for the purpose of this photo mid to late morning light seemed to work out for the best. This particular photo has grown on me, but I’m curious how it resonates with others. What are your thoughts? [...]
