Waimea Canyon Panoramic – Kauai, Hawaii

This is one of my favorite panoramic photos and is comprised of 50 vertical images for a final resolution of roughly 425 megapixels. The thumbnail may not be impressive but if you click through you’ll see just how expansive this area really is. If you have sharp eyes you might just find a helicopter.

Take your time in enjoying this massive landscape of Kauai’s most famous canyon over the next week as I will be away photographing Maui, Hawaii.

I have to admit, I’m jealous. I’d love to go back to Hawaii – especially if my sole purpose was to take photos – but I look forward to seeing your results.

One thing about Waimea Canyon (or places like it) is that it’s so big you can barely capture it’s magnitude with any image. The depth of field tends to wash out the scale of it. You need some sort of giant prime lens to get the right feel.

Am I making sense? Anyway, enjoy your trip.

Jim, I think you mentioned in an earlier email that it sometimes seems like one of us is scouting for the other – as our subjects often are similar. Continuing on that theme… I posted a bunch of panos recently (SF and Seattle) including one that went up yesterday.

    Scary.

Hmmm… and here I am thinking I was going good with 14-16 shot pano’s. Cool stuff!

Wow, 50 shots! Looks great Jim. Would love to hear about your process in creating this, from capture to your 50 foot long print. ;-)

@archshrk Thanks and you’re exactly right. Waimea Canyon like the Grand Canyon is difficult to capture effectively because of its massive scale. Even still it’s fun to try :) As for the trip… it was fun. I’ll be posting more about it in the coming days.

@Dan time for me to look for your panoramic photos. I got too caught up in the pre-trip rush to look for them before I left.

@Cody 14-16 shot panos are more than adequate particularly for this type of subject. Sometimes my excitement for a scene gets the better of me. I couldn’t resist taking a panoramic with this number of shots simply because I wanted to capture as much detail as possible. My hope was that the detail would help identify features to highlight the scale of the scene… like the helicopter.

@Mark From the look of my podcast topic poll it looks as though discussing the panoramic process will happen. I’ll let the poll run another week so stay tuned and track the results. As for the 50 foot print part… I’m still working on that :)
