2 Speedlinks That Can’t Wait For The Weekend – 5-11-2008

I’ve come across one web site and one article that was just too interesting to wait to pass on in a weekend speedlinks post. I’m certain that the readers of this blog will find these posts of interest. Enjoy!

The World Press Photo Awards put up a web site with winning photographs and photographer interviews from 2008 and 2007. The photographs are incredible and the stories behind them make for a great listen. I highly recommend this one.

A major pitfall of royalty free microstock photography recently surfaced when two technology companies ASUS and MSI began running campaigns using the same photograph with their products Photoshopped in. Some companies have the luxury of pursuing unique photography for their campaigns and others play with fire grabbing photographs with non-exclusive licensing terms. This was an instance where two companies got burned for making the same mistake. I would imagine this won’t be the only time we see this faux pas being made. This is a pitfall of Royalty Free, not microstock. The same thing happens all the time with traditional stock photography. Search for “Everywhere Girl” for the most famous example.

But either way, it’s pretty funny. Big companies can afford a few hundred bucks to buy with a Rights Managed license to get exclusivity. They run this risk when they’re cheap and buy Royalty Free, whether microstock or traditional.

@Lee you’re exactly right. I was a little too specific in my terminology. Thanks for the comment. I bet the few hundred dollars they saved when selecting this non-exclusive image seems like less of a bargain now.

Jim, Thanks for the link to the World Press images. It is quite nice having the video interviews with each shot. I have enjoyed several already.

On the stock image – seems some designer needs a lesson in white balance. :-) No wonder the kid is wearing a hat, its so cold his lips are blue.
