California Sea Otter Enhydra lutris wildlife photography by Jim M. Goldstein

This past weekends Sea Otter Photo Tour in Monterey, California was a lot of fun! Those in attendance had access to photograph Sea Otters and the other wildlife in the area that few get to experience. Each photographer had a dedicated space on a chartered boat that enabled them room to maneuver with out any visual obstructions. The three hours of uninterrupted wildlife photography with the ability to call on the expertise of myself, Rebecca Jackrel and the other experienced participants made for both an exhilerating and productive outing for all.

For your enjoyment here are 16 sample photos from all who were in attendance, but before I forget if you missed out on this outing stay tuned another just like it will be held later this winter.

Some Phenom shots in there, Jim, especially the squirt. A great collection of portraits. Can I ask what lens, settings, and ISO you used for the majority here? (Just a general ave idea - not specific for each shot.)

    Cheers,

@Gary Thanks. Rebecca’s photo was perfectly timed to get the stream of water in the air. My photos were taken with a 1Ds Mark III and 600mm + 1.4TC set up. Settings while in the fog were f/8, 1/1000 sec and ISO 400. At other times of the trip we were in brighter light and faster shutter speeds were possible. This helped while photographing a large group of Brown Pelicans that decided to take off all at once. I hope the info helps.

Great stuff Jim. That is quite a lens setup you’ve got.

Great shots Jim. Could you photoshop me into that group shot so at least I can pretend I was there? Just don’t put me in a bikini ok?

Looks like you folks had a great time. WOW…what a series of fantastic shots. Your image of the group, of the otter (side pose), and the single tern in flight & Eliya Selhub’s closeup shot of the otter with eyes closed are some of the best.
