Finding Inspiration and Reaping the Rewards

Lone Cloud and Mustard Covered Hillside

As an artist I am constantly reenergized when viewing the work of others. Artists who print, publish and show their work share a kindred spirit in finding outlets for their passion. This passion not only reveals a subject, a concept, technical expertise or vision it reveals their essence of being. With each viewing of the creative work of an artist you learn a little something about who they are as a person as well as an artist.

This past weekend my creative energy was recharged both from exploring the natural beauty of Northern California with good friends, who happen to be great photographers, and by being introduced / re-introduced to the work of other artists at world class museums and galleries.

The Morrison Planetarium at the California Academy of Science (video) renewed my understanding of man’s place in nature and our impact on our oasis in space. If you have yet to visit the new California Academy of Science be sure you do whether you’re a local or will be traveling to San Francisco from somewhere afar.

A visit to the Robert Koch Gallery in San Francisco to see the Dystopia exhibit reintroduced me to the work of Colin Finlay and Edward Burtynsky, while also introducing me to the work of Matthias Geiger whose book, Tide, I purchased.

Driving through Point Reyes Station I stopped in at the gallery of Marty Knapp where I rediscovered his great black and white landscape photography. After a great conversation with Marty I purchased his award winning Point Reyes 20 Years – Deluxe Edition book. If you’re big on black and white landscape photography I highly recommend Marty’s book and/or visiting his gallery.

In this day and age inspiration is only a click away on our computer, but nothing beats the in person dynamic of seeing art and talking to artists. If you’re ever in a creative slump keep this in mind. Lastly I can’t reinterate enough how important it is to support the artists you enjoy and respect. While the down economy is tough on everyone it is incredibly hard on artists who have devoted their life to their craft. Given the opportunity be sure to extend your support as you can.

Marty’s work is great. I picked up a small but elegant print at his last Open Studios and enjoy looking at it every day.

@John I almost picked up a print, but opted for the book. I’ll likely swing by in the future for a print. Its great to hear that you’re appreciating his work as well. Which print of his did you buy?
