Reader Contest: Guess My New Camera, Win A Print

Today after a short but intense round of research, all of 3 days, I bought a new camera. I’ve mentioned this on Twitter (@JimGoldstein) some and have been intentionally vague about it. My intention with being coy about the purchase was to make an announcement with an example of the output from the camera. I’m still going to do this, but I’ve noticed a flurry of guessing happening with my network on Twitter.

Let’s make it interesting. If anyone can guess what camera I purchased I’ll let you choose a 12×18 print (limited prints excluded) of your choice. I warn you though this will be no easy task to guess what I picked up today. One guess per person so guess wisely. I’ll announce the winner the day I post example output from the camera sometime the week of May 11th.

Have fun and good luck!

I bet you got a… Polaroid camera like my mom had when I was growing up. Except yours will be digital and a little SD card would slide out.

Or maybe… a Nikon D700 ?

Well, you already have the 1Ds MK III so it’s not going to be a 5D MKII. I doubt you’d buy a D3/D3x so I guess something medium format. The Red One is a bit too much, so…..

My final answer is : Hasselblad H3DII-50

My guess is you bought one of the new RED ONE cameras. Come on lucky dice!

I’m going to guess you haven’t bought a new DSLR. That’s take more than 3 days research. So a pocketable cam, that takes good photos and is versatile. How about a Panasonic TZ7?

Pinhole?

Of course, that’s not my guess. That’s what I’m going to call you if I don’t win the print! :p

All jokes aside… my guess is the iPhone.

Enjoy whatever it is!

I’m going to guess it’s something you’ll carry around on a daily basis. I’m thinking that you’re going to stick with a brand you know, but you’re a landscape photographer at heart, so you bought yourself a Canon G10?

I’m gonna go way out on a limb here – something completely different. Panasonic’s new Lumix DMC-GH1?

I’m going to say that you got a Minolta Autocord — I’m sure you’ve been jealous hearing about all the fun I have with mine and I don’t see how you could go on without one.

If not an Autocord, at least a TLR. Yeah, I’m pretty sure on that one.

12. Trevor Carpenter - May 5, 2009

I’m guessing that you got a nice little Canon G10.

Well every one has to have a rangefinder camera. There are a couple of choices today. But the new and cool one is the Bessa III 6×7.

I rekon it will be something unusual… perhaps a modified DSLR to shoot Infrared?

15. Jeremy Joubert - May 5, 2009

I think you bought a Sony HDR-CX100 High Definition Handycam® Camcorder.

16. Michael Toye - May 5, 2009

I think it’s a Leica S2 :)

hmmm… tricky, am tempted to say iphone or small compact camera but there are so many to wade through that it would take more than 3 days to choose. Unless its you’re going old-skool with a lomo ;) I think I too am going to guess that you bought one of the new RED ONE cameras.

I am guessing either a G10 or 5DII

Jim got one of those plastic cameras that leak light so he could blow through his remaining stash of Kodachrome 25.

OK, if we’re having Fun here, what the heck…
My first gut feeling after knowing your like for
Art Wolfe and your Exif podcasts, it would make
sense for your next purchase to be the
Sony HDR-CX100 High Definition Handycam® Camcorder,
to upgrade your Exif Interviews, ASMP meeting
coverages et all, and to make videos to go along
with your trips abroad…
what the heck… ;-)

I know you’re a Canon guy, but since you been shooting wildlife in the dark, my guess is that you purchased Nikon D3.

Nikon D3X??! :-)

24. Mark - May 5, 2009

I am guessing a Nikon D3X :-) . Welcome to the dark side.

I’m guessing a 50D since it just went on sale.

26. Michael Hubbard - May 5, 2009

Not to over analyze this, but…

Since you already have the 1Ds Mark III, I don’t think it would take 3 days to research anything else in the EOS line.

I believe you already have an iPhone (at least you post to Flickr with one).

I can’t imagine going back to a point and shoot, so I think the G10 is out. Especially since you posted “Still struggling with the decision…. off to dinner to think it over”.

I’m going to guess a Hasselblad… maybe the H3DII-50?

Nikon D3x – because that’s a really different camera ( targeted at medium format photogs )

29. John Wall - May 5, 2009

I don’t think I’d rule out the G10, Michael. Maybe he just came back from vacation and realized he wished he had a nice point-n-shoot at hand.

I’m guessing a Holga 135PC 35mm Pinhole Camera

I’m guessing, like everyone else noticed, that since you have the 1Ds Mark III that you wanted to expand your horizons a bit. I’m thinking the 3 days of research went into video options – something new to dabble with. Since you’re already with Canon I’m betting you went with the Canon 5D Mark II.

[Reply]

32. Charles Carstensen - May 6, 2009

Nikon D700.

33. Mandy - May 8, 2009

By the look of the zip line photo you could do with an indestructable camera with a homing beacon (in case you dropped it!).

So I’m going to go with video capability (video of the zipline would be fun…)

I’m a Canon woman so I’d go for the Canon 5D Mark II as well.

Maybe a G10 for just walking around…
