The 30th episode of EXIF and Beyond has been released (duration 24:53 min.)

This episode of EXIF and Beyond features an interview with Tom Hogarty product manager for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, the Adobe Raw Converter plugin and the DNG file format. Discussed is the release of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Beta and its many new features & enhancements. This talk is the first of a two part discussion.

Unlike past episodes the second half of this two part discussion has yet to take place. You are invited to ask Tom questions about Lightroom 3 Beta via comments to this blog post. The second half of our discussion will be comprised of answering your questions. While I can’t promise every question will be discussed I’ll aim to present the best and most pertinent questions to Tom to answer. Tom has been quite gracious to take part in this Q&A format and has even asked Lightroom 3 Beta users for specific feedback in this episode. If and when you comment be sure to leave your name and hometown so I can attribute your name to the question discussed.

The deadline to submit questions to be included in the next podcast is Sunday November 8th 15th at 9pm PST

I am hoping LR3 has the ability to open multiple catalogs at the same time, AND move previews between them, just like the Iview used to do.

Any plan for lens correction functions, like in Photoshop?
Especially distortion, vertical & horizontal perspective.

I like the new beta 3 except that it crashes when I try to export using the
watermark function. I've tried the simple, new text, and new image and
get the same results. Ver. 2.5 works fine on my vista ult.64
with 6 gigs of ram. Can you please offer a suggestion? Fritz

Tom: Will we ever see concurrent multi-user / networkable features in lightroom?

Hi Tom!

Just curious if there are any plans to include perspective correction in LR3 as part of the Develop module. It's one of the few reasons I ever have to use CS3 anymore, and it's a bit annoying to keep a big program like CS3 around just for a single feature or two. It seems like a rather obvious thing to include in the Develop module, perhaps alongside the crop/rotate panel.

Thanks!
Kurt

Will LR3 use the GPU acceleration as featured in Ps CS4? This is a huge productivity enhancement IMHO.

Will LR3/ACR ever use the GPU for RAW Decode acceleration and 1:1 renders? Sitting here waiting for 8GB of 7D / 5DMk2 RAW files to render takes forever.

Tom, Will Lightroom 3 fix the recovery slider for 5d mark 2 files? As of now the recovery slider destroys faithful color (especially in skin tones) in a way that it does not do with any other file type.

Also, are there any plans for cmyk conversion?

Has the sharpening function been improved? I am interested in the sharpening algorithm and how it compares to both USM and smart-sharpen in Photoshop. I have Lightroom 2 and of all the functions I enjoy, the sharpening action still leaves me unsatisfied and I always find myself using smart sharpen in CS3 for final output sharpening.

thanks

Tom:
Will we see improvement in Keywording in LR? While the powerful search filter is excellent for advanced searches, doing simple AND searches (Joe AND Donna) are still cumbersome, especially in comparison to how quickly and intuitively (and fun!) Photoshop Elements can makes it.

Advanced features are excellent, but please do not forget to have easy ways to do things like this (some of us have wives or family members trying to use the software too!)

Is there any official word whether we will be able to import from LR3 Beta to LR3 release? LR2 Beta collections could not be imported to LR2 release, so any work done in LR2 beta was considered 'throw away'.

lens correction functions would be nice.
Also I'd love to see the possibility to print several different pictures on ONE page.

That's it. Otherwise lovin' LR2 :)

Are there going to be keyboard shortcuts for all the core Develop functions (exposure, contrast, brightness, fill light, blacks, recovery, vibrance, saturation, etc). There are already built-in shortcuts to control the sliders (in coarse, medium and fine adjustment) but it's no use unless you can easily select what it is you would like to adjust. The essential core functions need shortcuts in the same way Photoshop has one letter keyboard shortcuts for things like clone stamp (s) and brush tool (b).

The Keyboard Shortcuts I would like are more for programming one key macros into third-party keyboards/game pads/controlers to speed up workflow… so the shortcut keys can be two, three or more keystrokes and don't have to make much sense.

I’ve been using Logitech’s G13 input device along with Mac Quickeys. Works well but every limiting using core functions and cumbersome to program.

Many Thanks,

John

As a workflow tool, one of the easiest means of cataloging people isn't to tag them – but to recognise them. Will Lightroom ever have facial recognition and management?

At present the import dialogue is trying to do far to much. Once you have imported from a few sources LR seems to try and read from all the various sources before allowing any imports to take place. Hopefully this is a bug rather than a deliberate behaviour as after importing from a few separate disks and my network drive all I get now is a spinning ball and boredom sets in!
Any new files now have to be introduced by syncing with already existing folders…so I can only import files already in LR2 rather than keeping the files separate.
When the new import dialogue actually worked it all looked very nice, but really offered nothing that couldn't be done in the older, quicker import dialogue. Please keep LR import mean and lean. I want my images in LR fast and don't require a fancy dialogu that slows everything down (and I especially don't want on that doesn't work at all as mine doesn't at present!

This is a big deal for me as well. I wonder what is holding Lightroom back from opening catalogs on network volumes or removable storage?
