The Quiet – Yosemite National Park

Locations to enjoy quiet are few and far between these days. Fewer and fewer locations exist where you can go to avoid hearing man and/or man made objects. Even when I was in the Arctic it was common to hear small planes and on one rare occasion a jumbo jet. As an artist I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of capturing images that exemplify intangible concepts such as “quiet”. Some photos are more successful than others… the following photo, taken in Yosemite National Park, is a favorite of mine capturing the essence of quiet.

Out of curiosity….
When and where was the last time you experienced silence (no man made noises)?

  • The last time I can say for certain that I heard only natural noise for any length of time was watching the sunrise on a quiet beach in the Maldives in February 2001. Seems a long time ago, but those kind of memories never fade.
  • I have just begun to do some audio recording and have become painfully aware of the impact of ambient noise, especially from traffic and airplanes. Just Tuesday, I was standing thigh deep in water, deep in the Fakahatchee Strand in Florida, setting up an automated remote recording device and it was silent of human noise for a few minutes, until a plane flew over, and then it returned to natural sounds only. Truly an amazing experience but harder and harder to find!

Drew it is particularly challenging. I was very impressed with Gordon Hempton attempt to raise awareness to this issue. I do have to admit when you find a place with no man made noise it is a truly special experience. Sad its not easier to experience.
