Today I’m kicking off the 2010 Photographer Social Media Survey and you’re invited to take part by clicking on the red link below:

2010 Photographer Social Media Survey
Estimated time of completion – 10-15 minutes
Please note by 2010 we mean business year 2010

This survey is being co-run with Miki Johnson and is a follow-up survey to the 2009 Photographer Social Media Survey. The goal of this survey is to evaluate and share developing trends of how photographers used social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and others in 2010 as compared to 2009.  The 2009 Survey was an incredible success thanks to your participation and word of mouth to your peers.

I invite you to take part in this survey and to spread word of it to other photo communities and photography trade organizations. Data compiled from this survey will be shared upon its completion to all who are interested.

Thanks for your interest, participation and efforts to share this survey with your peers.

I had to quit taking the survey because it would say that I have not completed some questions and would not take me to the next page. Frustrating!

This survey is deeply biased towards the amazingness of social networking. There are not enough options to answer negatively about Twitter or Facebook. Stopped answering on the Facebook section because of how silly the questions were.

Werner thanks for the feedback. Please continue with the survey. There are sections for other feedback and we’d appreciate input even if not glowing. All input is important. While we did our best to provide non-biased questions its easier said than done. Your input will help us provide balanced feedback and improve future surveys.

Anya be sure to look for the red asterisks. Those questions are required.

Interesting survey.  Here are a few thoughts.  This is not a “social media” survey, it is a Twitter/FB survey.  Your lower-bound on activity is too high – you are not accurately representing folks that are active but post fewer that 1x per day.  Unless your definition of “active” is at least 1x per day, in which case, you’re wrong.  Also, the survey assumes that people care how many followers they have – “don’t care” should be an option.  Survey assumes that there is agreement on the term “contacts” when there is not.  For example, I can follow innumerable people that have the ability to further my career, but that does not mean that they ever directly communicate with me.

There are certainly many interesting questions to be answered with a survey of this domain, but, as constructed, there is great potential for drawing erroneous conclusions.  Having Ph.D, in the social sciences and a background in marketing strategy at Fortune 50 companies, I shudder at the thought that anyone is drawing any conclusions from this survey.  I have deep passion for social media and the photography industry and I would be delighted to consult on future iterations of this instrument at no charge.
