A very rare sighting during trip through the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a prematurely born Caribou calf migrating with a small herd to the coastal plain. Normally calfs are born on the coastal plain. This small herd was looking to cross the Kongakut river which was quite wide and fast moving at this junction. They eventually opted not to cross. This is one of my favorites from this past summer. Taken at an elevation of about 1750 feet looking east through Caribou Pass towards Canada. Over the ridge to the left was a view of the Arctic Ocean and to the right was a view of the Kongakut River valley.
