I find it fascinating that one could be attracted to a location with death in the name as is the case with “Death Valley”, yet strangely I am. Death Valley is one of the worlds most extreme environments, but thanks to technological developments over the past century I can easily enjoy it. All it takes is a long air conditioned car ride and a decent supply of food and water if I choose to camp. Still it is
Normally the Mesquite Dunes in Death Valley National Park are known for their golden yellow and orange hues, but at the right time of day they can turn a stunning purple. While easily accessed and often traversed by park visitors its easy to be drawn into the vast dune field to find inspiration, both from the drama of the unfolding light that paints it and within oneself as you experience the solitude of the dunes. This is the third image in my series of light painting photos taken on the Racetrack in Death Valley, California. Other photos from this series include Light Lasso and Light Lasso II. I’m looking forward to returning to the Racetrack later this year on my next photo tour. This particular photo tour in October is booked, but if you’re interested in joining me to this amazing location via a private tour or on my next D
The racetrack in Death Valley National Park is a place that always leaves me in awe of nature. The tracks left behind stones on this dry lake bed have a mysterious magical quality to them and even more so at night. You wouldn’t think that order and chaos would ever blend together, yet sand dunes seem to portray both. Sand dunes possess order in the patterns at a micro and macro level, while their formation is chaotic and random from the
Experiencing the purity of nature is always exhilarating. Nothing to me exemplifies the purity of nature more than the untouched patterns found in the desert. While often explored by Death Valley National Park visitors the desert winds always reclaim Mother Nature’s domain. These still moments are fleeting and oh so prized. One thing I really enjoy about sharing my photography is that every so often a photo finds its perfect audience who can fully appreciate a core thought that inspired its creation. Case in point is my Light Lasso photo from Death Valley National Park that was recently published in the quarterly edition of the DarkSky.org quarterly publication Nightscape with a feature on “Seeing Blue, Blue Rich White Light”
This is the second in a series of light painting photos from Death Valley’s Racetrack playa I took last year. The first Racetrack Light Lasso seemed to catch a few eyes. In the near future I’ll be releasing the remainder of this series in my fine art gallery.
