“Chiaroscuro” in regard to photography, as with painting and cinematography, describes “extreme low-key lighting to create distinct areas of light and darkness” (to quote Wikipedia). “The term early broadened in meaning to cover all strong contrasts in illumination between light and dark areas in art.” (Wikipedia) Note: This image will animate 3 times. Late Sunday I learned that this week is National Wildlife Week. This is a great time to make use of a variety of online resources to educate friends or just get out and enjoy / pay respect to wildlife in your area. More information can be found at… National Wildlife Week – National Wildlife Federation About the photo: Taken in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The wolf, not knowing I was in the area, c
Another shot of Cloud Gate from Millenium Park in Chicago. This was one of the few photos taken where the number of people in the reflection was kept to a minimum. With people wandering in and out of the area a wide angle view of a reflection is pretty tough to come by hence my choice for using a longer focal length (likely ~200mm). On a side note I have to admit I was surprised how much fun it was to photograph this

This was the view looking south back towards my camp and at the northern edge of the Brooks Mountain range. The view out to the Arctic Plain (a large panoramic) can be see in my earlier post “Bush Administration Memos Tell Officia
This photo was taken from the Tunnel View lookout, but unlike many of the traditional wide angle views of Yosemite valley I opted for a super-telephoto lens at a focal length of 1200mm (600mm+2x TC). I was very lucky on this evening, not only was their rich red light on Half Dome as the last light of the day filtered through the atmosphere, but low lying clouds were wafting through as well. The clouds seem to create
One of the most difficult tasks as a photographer is to master the art of less is more. One of the most common techniques employed to accomplish this is to utilize “negative space”. “Negative space” is empty space left around and between your subject. When employed correctly, the empty space around your subject provides a subtle backdrop to place emphasis on your subject. Combined with a caref
