Christmas Wonderland, Yosemite National Park

Monday’s snow storm transformed Yosemite before my eyes from a rusty yellow and green landscape to a white snowy wonderland. Standing in a meadow during a heavy snow storm I couldn’t help but think “Christmas Wonderland” when I photographed the Yosemite Valley Chapel. The snow covered pine tree, vibrant red historic structure and icy Oak trees as a backdrop epitomized what comes to mind when I

Foggy Urban Landscape, San Francisco

With so much attention paid to exotic landscape locations and civilization free scenes its easy to forget that we all have something special in our own backyard. Sometimes it takes a special moment to see it, but there is always something amazing in our backyard. This thought isn’t too different than one I expressed sometime ago after I took Morning Sunlight & Fog – Between You, Me and the Trees and ran the

A Brown-throated Sloth (Bradypus variegatus) and Baby

Sloths are one of the oddest creatures I’ve encountered, but they always have a smile on their face. While their smile is easy to take note of, if you look closer you’ll find their fur is green from algae and is home to its own ecosystem of insects. This mobile ecosystem develops as sloths move so slowly. In this photo you can see the green in the fur of the adult sloth, but the baby looks quite brown. [t

To The Moon – Japantown, San Francisco

There is a lot to be said for serendipity when taking photos.  Earlier in the year after a planned excursion to photograph Japantown at dusk here in San Francisco, I was returning to my car when I saw a really bright street lamp out of the corner of my eye. Taking a double take I realized that it wasn’t a streetlamp in the distance, but the full moon rising over Geary Blvd.  I was unable to set up my camera in

Breakfast in Costa Rica with White-headed Capuchin Monkeys

Ever have the feeling that someone is watching you? While traveling in Costa Rica earlier this year I made my way to Santa Elena to visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Here my wife and I woke up for a classic Costa Rican breakfast only to find a troupe of White-headed Capuchin monkeys gawking at us as we ate. Apparently they knew when breakfast was served and would show up for the start of it in the hopes of g

Sinopah Mountain Reflected in Two Medicine Lake at Sunset

Two Medicine Lake in Glacier National Park isn’t the most traveled to location, but it is one of the most beautiful.  The serene nature of the lake is fleeting as many kayakers and small boat operators like to enjoy it. I caught this photo just before a boat disrupted the stillness of the water. I was idealistically hoping that this moment would last forever, but change in nature and by man is constant. [tags]L

When A Photo of Foggy San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge Is Not Enough

As a photographer I always strive to capture the beauty of a scene I’m photographing and often it is more than possible to do so. Still Photography by its nature is revealing, yet also not so revealing. Still Photography by definition has its limits displaying a split second of time or a short duration of time if using a slow shutter speed. Freezing time has its merits lettings others see something they’v

Golden Gate Bridge Shrouded in Fog at Sunrise

I recently photographed my elusive “white whale” photo subject, a fog enveloped Golden Gate Bridge at sunrise.  You might expect I’d be happy with capturing dozens of photos of this amazing phenomenon, but I’m eager to photograph it again to get a different take on it. I should clarify I am very satisfied with the photos captured including the one shown below, but I have an incredibly strong d
