Sea Otters of California Tour

November 7th, 2009 and January 23rd, 2010

Participants Gallery From Past Trips

Join award winning photographer, Jim M. Goldstein, in Moss Landing, California for this special wildlife photography tour.

From our perch on a comfortable pontoon boat we will have the ability to photograph the natural behaviors of a variety of species including California Sea Otters. Our small group will allow us to make the most of each encounter.

After a brief safety orientation, our Captain will guide us out of the harbor and into the protected Elkhorn Slough in search of the sea otters who call this wildlife rich area home.

We will capture feeding and grooming behaviors and with any luck some play-time too.  Other species we may encounter include Harbor Seals, California Sea Lions, Cormorants, and Pelicans, Grebes and Surf Scoters as well as many other shore birds.

Join us on for an afternoon / sunset photo shoot.  After the session we will have dinner at a local fish market where we will download images, discuss the afternoon shoot and provide critiques.  This is your time so come prepared with lots of questions!

To ensure the best instruction and otter interaction possible this workshop will be limited to a maximum of eight (8) participants.

Death Valley – Death Valley National Park, California

October 16th, 2009 – Sunday October 18th, 2009

Join award winning photographer, Jim M Goldstein, in Death Valley National Park, California for an amazing weekend in the valley.

Covering more than 3 million acres, Death Valley is the largest National Park in the lower 48. It is at times raw, powerful and intimidating but it can be delicate and gentle as well. With such a vast area it is easy for visitors to become overwhelmed and miss out on photographic opportunities. Let us take the guess work out of it for you. We will cover as much ground as we can but our main focus, if conditions are favorable, will be the legendary Race Track and it’s moving stones. The dirt ‘road’ to the Race Track loves to chew up tires and spit them out but our four-wheel drive vehicles have made the trip before – besides, a flat tire allows for some unexpected photo opportunities during the change! Don’t expect much sleep on this trip as we will take advantage of every opportunity from sunrise landscapes, midday macros, glorious sunsets and with clear skies – star trails at night.

To ensure the best instruction and access to this remote area of the park, this workshop will be limited to a maximum of four (4) participants. Participants must be in good physical shape and be able to hike with photo gear and withstand long hours in a vehicle over extremely bumpy dirt tracks. The Racetrack is 2.8 miles long and 1.3 miles wide. Remember, distances are deceiving in the desert.

Dates: October 16-18, 2009, Optional fourth day extension may be arranged

Tour Leader: Jim M Goldstein, assisted by Rebecca Jackrel

Participation: 4

Fee: $799.00

Transportation and meals: Transportation to and from Death Valley is the participants responsibility. Lunch and Dinner will be provided on Saturday and Breakfast on Sunday. All other meals and snacks are the participants responsibility.

Water: There is no water at the Race Track. Make certain you have a sturdy water bottle or hydration pack. We will carry an adequate supply for the group but in the desert, more is better.

Recommended Lodging:
Come prepared to rough it! A sturdy tent, a warm sleeping bag and a Therma-rest are in order for this trip. Let us know at booking if you would be willing to share a tent with other participants as we may be able to cut down on the amount of gear we bring.

What to bring:
This tour is designed for 35mm SLR equipment. A sturdy tripod, ball head and a cable release are a must.

Participants who have not paid the remaining balance on that date will forfeit their spot on the tour and will lose their deposit.
