San Francisco is an easy town to fall in love with. The views never cease to amaze and the weather conditions give the city a new look each and every day. No look is more dramatic or romantic as a blanket of fog laying over the bay and around the iconic Golden Gate Bridge & skyline of San Francisco. This photo was taken this past February when lighting and weather conditions were perfect, The two frequently are n
After a couple weeks of stellar weather where it has been clear, sunny and very warm here in San Francisco its back to typical San Francisco summer weather… namely foggy. The fog has never bothered me mostly because I consider it natural air conditioning. The San Francisco bay area has a variety of micro-climates so when it’s foggy in San Francisco, it’s sunny and warm a short distance away. Sun is
Seeing that we’re about to end another week I thought a sunset / dusk photo might be in order. Pictured below is the north western section of San Francisco (Sea Cliff, Outer Richmond, the Golden Gate Park and Outer Sunset) as seen from the Marin Headlands on a mildly foggy evening at dusk. Note the solid horizontal band dividing the city lights is Golden Gate Park. I should also note as we transition into the w
With so much attention paid to exotic landscape locations and civilization free scenes its easy to forget that we all have something special in our own backyard. Sometimes it takes a special moment to see it, but there is always something amazing in our backyard. This thought isn’t too different than one I expressed sometime ago after I took Morning Sunlight & Fog – Between You, Me and the Trees and ran the
As a photographer I always strive to capture the beauty of a scene I’m photographing and often it is more than possible to do so. Still Photography by its nature is revealing, yet also not so revealing. Still Photography by definition has its limits displaying a split second of time or a short duration of time if using a slow shutter speed. Freezing time has its merits lettings others see something they’v
It’s quite common to see iconic photos of San Francisco with the spans of the Golden Gate Bridge emerging from the fog, but here is a view of just the fog at sunset. On this particular evening I had no time to get in place to photograph the bridge in the fog. Instead, much closer to home, I caught a view I’ve yet to see of the fog partially covering the western portion of the city “San Francisco Sun
This photo was taken from a higher vantage point the same day I photographed Out of the Gloom: Golden Gate Bridge and Fog. I wasn’t sure this would come out. The fog was quickly rising, the light was quickly fading and I needed to rush back to my car before the rangers locked a gate restricting auto travel in and out of the area. One thing is for sure time is rarely on the side of a photographer. View More Gold
One aspect of San Francisco that has forever fascinated and inspired me is the fog. I suppose having lived most of my life in areas that lacked such dense fog adds to my appreciation of it. While many associate rain as being a cleansing phenomenon, I can’t help but think of fog in the same way. It shrouds what many may consider commonplace views and magically re-reveals them in dramatic fashion. If you’re
