Last weeks WordPress upgrade nightmare, noted here, has finally come to an end. I spent the last few days searching for the right theme to tweak and make my own. This was not an easy task and proved to me more time consuming than the half day spent customizing the theme. The blog as you see it is the end result. For those lacking a photographic memory below is the comparison between the two. So what is different? See below…

New vs Old JMG-Galleries Blog Layout

Although the differences may not be obvious to most due to the similar font and image treatment the old and new layouts are quite different. The two biggest differences is the layout is now wider and supports 3 columns versus 2 columns. I had been meaning to make this upgrade for sometime and last weeks incident gave me the urgency to pursue it. In addition to the two column on the right I wanted to implement a theme with an information filled footer. My hope is that this new layout will help me better display information pertaining to the blog, my podcast and of course my photography all while providing viewers faster load time.

Am I happy with how things are? Well things are better than they were, but I’m still not 100% satisfied with the layout. I’ll be making some minor tweaks in the future, so for those with a keen eye keep your eyes open.

A question for those who have subscribed to this blog for sometime… is the load time performance better? I’ve received some preliminary feedback that the blog does indeed load faster, but I’m curious to get a broader sampling of feedback. Thanks in advance!

In an effort to address performance issues with my blog I decided to upgrade to the latest version of WordPress. Unfortunately the process of upgrading my blog did not go smoothly. After accidentally over writing my database, the equivalent of erasing all entries from the past year and half, my heart became firmly lodged in my throat. Fortunately my web host, he.net whom I highly recommend, was able to restore the database and I was then able to properly install the upgrade. Sadly my theme is no longer compatible with the new version of WordPress and I ran out of time in finding and configuring a replacement. As a result my blog now has a rather generic feel. Over the next few days more changes will be taking effect here so please bear with me as I finalize my blog configuration and theme selection.

Chase Jarvis, a photographer whose work and business acumen I greatly respect, has announced that he’ll sponsor one lucky photographer to ASMP’s Strictly Business 2 event in Chicago. I attended Strictly Business 2 in Los Angeles and was incredibly impressed by it.

The end of 2007 was full of “best of” lists, but over the past year I’ve found that many readers of the JMG-Galleries blog are incredibly talented photographers in their own right and deserved their own “best of photo” attention. The results of this “Best Photos From 2007″ blog project puts a twist to the normal “best of photo” list by aggregating links to the work of 29 photographers from around the globe who are passionate and dedicated to their craft. As you’ll see from the results below 2007 was a great year for photographers and I hope that 2008 proves to be an even better year.
Enjoy and good luck picking out your favorite from these great submissions!

There are two days left to submit your best photos from 2007 in my third photography blog project aptly titled “Your Best Photos From 2007″. To date I’ve received a good number of submissions. If you’re sitting on the fence about whether to take part or not now is the time to act. These projects are a great learning tool and often help introduce photographers to each other, new subjects and new techniques. It doesn’t work as well if you don’t take part.

Your best can be one photos, a few or even 10.
If you have a photography-related site (a personal web site or a Flickr page/set), take a minute to…

  1. - Access my Contact page
Note: Omit “http://” on any links.
  2. - In the subject line type “Your Best Photos From 2007”
  3. - In the message put the name of your site, web address, link to your “Your Best Photo From 2007” photo/blog entry and a one sentence description about your photo.

The deadline to take part will be FRIDAY JANUARY 11th at 11:59PM PST.
The following Monday I’ll post a link to all submitted sites and photos.
DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR PHOTO/BLOG LINK AS A COMMENT TO THIS ENTRY.
Having everyones photos and stories listed at once should make for a great Monday read.

Thanks and I look forward to your submissions!

Join me at the Media Web Meet Up III: The Producers where I’ll be a panelist with fellow photographer Lane Hartwell, legal expert Jason Schultz from the Electronic FrontierFoundation (EFF) and announced last night Heather Champ from Flickr.

Event Details

Subject: The Producers - people creating content for the Media Web

Speakers:

Lane Hartwell, Photographer - http://fetching.net
Jason Schultz, Lawyer, EFF - http://eff.org
Jim Goldstein, Photographer - http://www.jmg-galleries.com
Heather Champ, Flickr - http://www.flickr.com

Probably the biggest stakeholders in the Media Web space are those who are producing the creative content that everyone is benefiting from. They are also the ones dealing with the pains that are multiple formats, incompatible platforms and closed protocols as well as the grey areas around copyright.

This month’s Media Web Meetup is a discussion led by The Producers themselves to talk about these important issues. Without artists, we wouldn’t have a media web at all…

++++++++++++++

Location:

Neue Songbird Nest

585 Howard Street between 1st and 2nd
San Francisco, California 94107

(Yahoo! Maps, Google Maps)

These meet-ups are intended to get people interested and working in the media web together to discuss what it means to be open. Those working on open protocols, methods and formats on the web are very welcome, too!
