Sea Otters are one of the more interesting wild animals in Northern California. From their playful interaction to their use of rocks as tools to eat their favorite food it’s hard to get enough of them. It is with pain in my heart and tears in my eyes that I write this memoriam of my friend Rebecca Jackrel who recently lost her battle with cancer this week. Rebecca was a driven and dedicated wildlife photographer who prided herself in recent years raising awareness to the plight of the Ethiopian Wolf via the Ethiopian Wolf Project with Will Burrard-Lucas . Life is full of unexpected detours as I’m sure you know. Last week my 15 month old son was enjoying a fine vintage of a contagious virus that required a parents full attention to keep him from infecting other kids. I’ll give you one guess who won the lottery for that privilege. While we avoided having to wearing a hazardous material suits in public, we did get to go on some walks in our hilly neighborhood
This weekend I had the great fortune of attending the World Photography Festival in San Francisco. This was their first year here in town and I’m happy to report they’ll be returning yearly. Truly an inspirational location where you’ll find beauty right underfoot, if you can divert your attention from the larger magnificent scenery. C
The diversity and relative abundance of wildlife here in Northern California is one of the many qualities of this area that attracted me to call this location home. With the thought of “abundance” in mind I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend with family sharing good food and creating lasting memories. Even at this time of year birds have their feasts, rather than being feasted on, as is eviden
In case you missed it this past week it was reported that the Brown Pelican is being taken off the Endangered Species List. Here in California you might not know they’re endangered, as they’re a relatively common sight flying along the coast. From what I’ve read their population is still of concern in some gulf states. While I’m happy to hear that a species has been making a comeback I’m
